Hwy 2 east of Skykomish. Necklace Valley is a fragile sub-alpine valley with extensive meadows. As you walk up the valley, your senses will be delighted with the moss-covered trees and rushing streams. The work will be converting old, slippery puncheon (boardwalk) into turnpike structures (raised, hardened tread). The worksite is a little over 2 miles in, so you need to be prepared to hike an hour to and from the worksite, carrying tools.
Driving directions:
From Seattle, drive north on I-5 to Everett and take exit 194 onto US 2. Drive east on US 2 to the Skykomish Ranger Station, approximately 1 mile beyond the town of Skykomish. Continue driving east one-half mile and turn right (south) on the Foss River Road (Forest Service Road 68). Follow the Foss River Road for 4.1 miles to the trailhead and parking area on the left (Driving time from Seattle: approximately 2.0 hours.) Also, if you wish to avoid I-5 and the Everett traffic and you are coming from the south, you can drive I-405 north from Bellevue and just before Woodinville turn onto Highway 522 to Monroe/Stevens Pass. At Monroe you join Highway 2 and continue according to the above instructions.
