View of Mt. Shuksan from upper switchbacks by Wilson-4

Another Mt Baker gem. The Church Mountain trail rises from the North Fork Nooksack river valley to almost the summit of Church Mountain. This trail offers spectacular views of both Mt Baker and Shuksan the two giants of the north Cascades. We are doing general maintenance on the first part of the trail including drainage improvement, tread repair and brushing.

Church Mountain , situated in the North Cascades, affords a spectacular view of Mt Baker and Mt Shuksan. The trail up the mountain is steep, first through some old growth and later through green meadows, but the view along the way is well worth the effort. It can be hot along the trail, and it is advisable to bring plenty of water. There is about 3,600 feet of elevation gain over a distance of 4.2 miles. Hiker only.

Driving directions:
From Bellingham take exit 255 off of I-5 and drive east on Highway 542 (the Mount Baker Highway) to the town of Glacier, then continue an additional 5.7 miles. At Forest Service Road 3040, signed “East Church Road”, turn left and drive 2.6 miles to the trailhead. (Driving time from Seattle: approximately 3 hours.)
